Police: Man Used Phony Cash To Buy Food At Elgin Restaurants
ELGIN (CBS) -- An Elgin man has been charged with forgery for using counterfeit money to pay for meals at two restaurants last month in the northwest suburb.
Maurice Garner, 19, has been charged with three felony counts of forgery, according to a statement from Elgin police. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer.
Garner entered a restaurant on Larkin Avenue in Elgin about 7:40 p.m. July 27 and paid for a food order using counterfeit currency, police said. About 8:20 p.m. that same day, he did the same thing at a restaurant on Randall Road in Elgin.
Investigators eventually identified Garner as the suspect and found him in the 200 block of Locust Street at 8:02 p.m. Wednesday, police said. When the officers tried to arrest him, Garner ran away but was apprehended a short time later.
Garner was ordered held at the Kane County Jail on a $40,000 bond Friday, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.
