Bears Tight End Zach Miller Returns From Concussion

By Chris Emma--

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- When Bears tight end Zach Miller last spoke with the media two weeks ago in Bourbonnais, he was in good spirits. But later that day, concussion symptoms set in, which sidelined him from practice.

Miller rejoined the Bears on Saturday at Halas Hall after working his way back the past week with limited participation. He practiced Saturday in a limited role.

"I was trying to just get through it, maybe it would clear up," Miller said of the concussion. "But it didn't."

Miller's concussion occurred on July 31 during a practice at Olivet Nazarene. He was hit by Lamarr Houston near the goal line but continued on with practice. The symptoms set in later that evening.

With Miller out from practice, Tony Moeaki took the role of No. 1 tight end. The Bears have also dealt with injuries to Greg Scruggs, Khari Lee and Ben Braunecker during camp.

Miller's return to the practice field was certainly welcomed.

"We'll see where he is as we head to New England tomorrow after practice," Bears coach John Fox said of Miller. "He'll practice again tomorrow, we'll see how he feels and reacts to that. We'll evaluate him once we get up to Providence in our preparation for New England."

Bears running back Ka'Deem Carey and safety DeAndre Houston-Carson were also placed into the concussion protocol, while Senorise Perry (hamstring), Cornelius Washington (ankle, knee) didn't participate.

The 31-year-old Miller has dealt with several injuries during his NFL career. He didn't play the 2012, 2013 or 2014 seasons due to injuries. However, he played 15 games last season and the Bears trusted him with the role of a top tight end after moving Martellus Bennett to New England.

Miller and the Bears will practice with Bennett and the Patriots next week in New England.
