Catholic School Blesses Police Officers In West Lawn
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Catholic School in the West Lawn neighborhood started the school year in a unique way Wednesday, by offering a blessing for Chicago police officers.
"They face danger every day when they go to work, so we want to keep them close to our hearts, and in our prayers," said Candice Usauskas, principal of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School.
Some students held up signs that said "We Back The Badge," as about a dozen officers were blessed with holy water by Fr. John McDonnell.
"We recognize that with the increase of violence in our society, your job is made much more difficult, much more challenging, and we want to use this time to help to support you, and know that we have your backs," she said.

Usauskas said a lot of police officers live in the community, and she is especially watchful on the news when officers are injured or killed.
"I'm always looking to see and make sure it's not one of my alumni, or one of my neighbors. You take ownership, and that's what I want the children to do. I want the children to realize that these people are one of us, and that it's important that we pray for their safety," she said.
Officer Rick Roberts, who lives in the St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish, said it was a nice gesture.
"This job is a blessing, but it's nice that the parish recognizes the police officers," he said.
Officer Elizabeth Sullivan said it was wonderful.
"I think we need the support of the community, and I think it's awesome that they're doing this," she said.
Jose Cornejo was among the parents at the blessing ceremony.
"Wanted to let them know that we'll always have their back," he said.
After the blessing, officers were invited inside the school for refreshments.
