Cubs To Bring Up Bullpen Reinforcements, Send Lackey, Rondon To DL

(CBS) The Cubs continue to add to their bullpen.

Chicago will promote left-hander Rob Zastryzny and right-hander Felix Pena from Triple-A Iowa before Friday evening's game at Colorado, according to multiple reports, while sending right-hander John Lackey and right-hander Hector Rondon to the disabled list.

Lackey has been dealing with soreness in his throwing shoulder dating back to last Sunday's start, when he left in the middle of an at-bat in the seventh inning. He initially had his start this weekend pushed back to Tuesday but now will be out for a longer stretch. Lackey is 9-7 with a 3.41 ERA this season. An MRI confirmed that he has a right shoulder strain, the Tribune's Mark Gonzales reported Friday.

Rondo's right triceps strain has been a little more mysterious. After an outing on Aug. 2, the Cubs shelved him for 11 days but didn't send him to the DL. He returned last Sunday with normal velocity but gave up four runs while only getting one out as the Cubs faltered late against the Cardinals. He pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday but hasn't pitched since. Rondon has a 2.47 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in 45 appearances this season.

The 24-year-old Zastryzny is 7-3 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 15 appearances, including 14 starts, at Triple-A this season. He's the first pitcher drafted by the Theo Epstein-Jed Hoyer regime to reach the big leagues. He was a second-round pick in 2013.

The 26-year-old Pena is 3-4 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 36 appearances, all in relief, at Triple-A.

To make room for Zastryzny and Pena on the 40-man roster, the Cubs placed pitchers Aaron Brooks and Dallas Beeler on the 60-day DL.
