Girl, 8, And Woman Shot In Austin

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 8-year-old girl and a 40-year-old woman were wounded when shots rang out during a prayer vigil for the victim of an earlier shooting in the Austin neighborhood.

The girl was at least the 16th child under age 11 who has been shot in Chicago since June.

Jamiah Barnes, 8, was crossing the street to attend a prayer vigil for a 14-year-old boy who had been slain earlier in the day, just three blocks away, when two men began arguing and someone began shooting. Jamiah was shot in the forearm, and a 40-year-old woman was shot in the hand.

Ashake Banks, who lost her own daughter to gun violence four years ago, rushed both victims to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

"I had to relive that all over again. I just couldn't see another baby losing their life, and I'm so sick of it. I'm sick of the community not saying nothing. They're not stepping up. These kids are just losing their life. The kids don't even stand a chance," she said.

Jamiah's mother said she can't believe her second-youngest daughter is the city's latest shooting victim.

"I'm hurt. I'm hurt," Jamie Ellis said. "It shouldn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened with somebody's grieving for their loved ones."

Jamiah was treated and released. An update on the woman's condition was not immediately available Monday morning.

No one was in custody Monday morning.

Community activist Andrew Holmes was offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
