Report: Tim Beckman Is Now A Volunteer Assistant Coach At North Carolina

(CBS) About a year after being fired by Illinois following a player mistreatment scandal, Tim Beckman has returned to the coaching ranks.

Beckman is currently a volunteer coach at North Carolina, the Champaign News-Gazette reported. Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora and Beckman have previous ties, having both worked at Oklahoma State in 2007. Beckman's responsibility is to scout and watch film for North Carolina, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Beckman sat out of coaching for the 2015 season after he was fired last Aug. 28, just seven days before the Illini's season opener. Beckman was shown the door because the preliminary results of an investigation confirmed allegations that he mistreated players, including deterring injury reporting and attempting to influence medical decisions during his tenure, which covered three seasons and started in December 2011.

Beckman went 12-25 in his three-year run and compiled an abysmal 4-20 mark in Big Ten play.

North Carolina plays at Illinois on Sept. 10, but it's not yet clear if Beckman will accompany the Tar Heels to Champaign for the game.
