Cubs' Chris Bosio On Kyle Hendricks: 'An Innovator Out There'

(CBS) As Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks continued his domination with seven scoreless innings in a win against the Pirates on Tuesday night in which he lowered his ERA to an MLB-best 2.09, pitching coach Chris Bosio continues to laud his pupil for a deep pitching arsenal that allows him to find such great success.

"What I try to do is explain to these guys, you can have different speeds on your pitches just like as a golfer might have three different shots with three different clubs in being able to hit a golf shot 100 yards, with not only a gap wedge (but) a 9-iron and an 8-iron," Bosio said in an interview with Mike Mulligan and David Haugh on 670 The Score on Wednesday morning. "Kyle can do that with a fastball. He's an innovator out there trying to do different things. The element of surprise, he gets all that. The fact that he doesn't throw hard, again it's the highest compliment you can give a pitcher. Because he does it in different ways. Oh, by the way, he punched out 180 guys last year.

"At the end of the year, you're looking at his numbers and you're like, 'Wow, this guy's numbers are unbelievable.' And you look at the speed, and you're like, 'There's just no way.' Well, there's a lot of pitchers in the league coming up that throw very similar to Kyle with the stuff. A lot of the scouts are recognizing that because it's really hard to find a 95-to-98-mph command guy that can do the kind of stuff Kyle's doing.

"Everybody's going out there and getting these guys that can work the ball a little bit and follow a scouting report, because those are the guys you can win with."
