2 Felons Charged After Posting 'Facebook Live' Video From Gun Range: Police

(STMW) -- Two felons were charged after one of them posted a video to Facebook of himself shooting a gun Wednesday at a north suburban shooting range.

A police officer was monitoring Facebook activity Wednesday when he saw a Facebook Live video of a man he knew to be a felon and gang member shooting a handgun at a range in Winthrop Harbor, according to a statement from Evanston police. The officer was also able to identify the shooting range where the video was being recorded.

Facebook Live allows users to post video of events happening in real time, police said. The officer contacted police in Winthrop Harbor and officers were sent to the range. Winthrop Harbor police arrested Demarcus Curtis, 25, of the 1300 block of Fargo Street in Des Plaines, who Evanston police said was recording the video.

Officers also arrested another felon, Nicholas Mayfield, 25, of the 3900 block of County Club Hills, who was also shooting at the range, police said.

Both men were charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony, police said.

Curtis was ordered held at the Lake County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to the Lake County sheriff's office. Bond for Mayfield was set at $30,000.
