Two Men Fatally Shot Near Chicago Park

(STMW) -- Two men were shot to death near an Englewood neighborhood park Monday evening on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.

It happened about 7:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Marquette, near Ogden Park.

A 47-year-old man was walking his dog when someone in a vehicle started shooting, striking him in the chest, police said. The shots also struck a 24-year-old man in the chest as he ran away from the gunfire. Police at the scene the scene said the shots were fired from Elizabeth Street and into the park where the victims were struck, on Black Drive west of the tennis courts.

Both men were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately confirm the deaths.

It was unclear if either of the victims were intended targets.

A witness who asked to remain anonymous said he was playing basketball north of the shooting scene when he heard the gunshots.

"When I heard the shots, I thought my little brother was down here playing…and we ran over here," said the man, who said he knew the younger victim. "His brother is dying of cancer and so he was just trying to eat some barbecue with his family today — and that just happened.

"He was just standing with the wrong crowd," the man said. "He ain't no gangbanger…he's got a daughter."
