Near West Side Man Gets 3 Years In Prison For Killing Dog

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Near West Side man has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing a dog in March.

Melvin Stovall, 52, of the 2000 block of West Adams, pleaded guilty Monday to one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, according to Cook County court records.

About 10 p.m. March 10, Stovall repeatedly picked the dog up by its legs and dropped it on its head, according to police.

CPD's Animal Crimes Team investigated the dog's killing and arrested Stovall, police said.

Judge Maura Slattery Boyle sentenced Stovall to three years in prison Monday, according to court records. He will receive credit for 181 days served in the Cook County Jail, and must serve one year of supervised release.
