One Dead After Shooting, Fight At U. of I. Party

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was fatally shot and several others wounded during a fight at a campus party at the University of Illinois.

The shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. in the 300 block of East Green Street, police said.

George Korchev of Mundelein was pronounced dead at 1:02 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital, Champaign County coroner Duane Northrup said.

Korchev was walking near the area when the shots were fired.

Three others were wounded in the shooting and none of the victims were involved in the fight.

Another person was slightly injured after being hit by a car.

Approximately 30 minutes later, at 1:08 a.m, police received another report of gunfire in the 700 Block of S. State St.

Upon arrival, officers located a victim who was transported to an area hospital for a non-critical gunshot wound.

Sunday morning, Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said her thoughts and prayers are with Korchev's family and the victims of the shootings. "This type of senseless gun violence is unacceptable in our community. The Champaign Police Department, University of Illinois Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies are aggressively pursuing all leads in this ongoing investigation," the city posted on its Facebook page.

According to multiple reports, police believe the shootings may be related, and they're looking for those responsible. Officials are asking anyone who was at the party or who may have witnessed any incidents to contact the Champaign Police Investigations Division at police@champaignil.gov or by phone at (217) 351-4545.

Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible for the crimes.
