1 Killed, 22 Wounded In Monday Shootings Across Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One man was killed and at least 22 other people were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago.
The homicide happened about 3:30 p.m. in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, where two men were sitting in a car in the 7000 block of South Sangamon when someone opened fire from a passing vehicle, according to Chicago Police.
They were taken to St. Bernard Hospital. One man, 25, was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 6:01 p.m. of a gunshot wound to the neck, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name has not been released. The other man, 20, was in good condition with an arm wound.
The day's latest spate of gun violence left seven people wounded in less than two hours.
At 11:23 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was walking in the 2600 block of South California when someone in a red vehicle nearby fired shots, striking him in the right arm, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the teenager is a documented gang member.
An 18-year-old was sitting on a front porch at 10:52 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Loomis in the South Side Gresham neighborhood when another male walked up and fired shots, police said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and both shoulders and was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. A second man, 19, later walked into Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park suffering from graze wounds to the arm and buttocks. He was listed in good condition.
At 10:23 p.m., a 34-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 4400 block of West Belmont on the Northwest Side when someone fired shots from a vehicle, police said. He was shot in the foot and taken to a hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Less than 10 minutes earlier, a 42-year-old man was wounded in a Chicago Lawn neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side. He was walking on the sidewalk at 10:17 p.m. in the 3000 block of West 62nd when someone walked up and fired shots at him, police said. He was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At 9:53 p.m., two teenage boys were wounded in an Austin neighborhood shooting on the West Side. The boys, ages 13 and 14, were passengers in a vehicle traveling east in the 5500 block of West Lake when a male on the sidewalk nearby opened fire, police said. The younger boy was shot in the left leg and the older boy suffered a gunshot wound to the right knee. The boys later showed up at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where both of their conditions were stabilized.
About an hour earlier, a 19-year-old man was wounded in a separate Austin shooting. The 19-year-old man was a passenger in a northbound vehicle about 8:55 p.m. in the 100 block of North Cicero when someone in a silver car fired shots, police said. The man was shot in the buttocks and was taken to Loretto Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Five minutes earlier, a 17-year-old boy was shot near Marquette Park on the Southwest Side. He boy showed up at Holy Cross Hospital and said he'd been shot in the hand about 8:50 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Francisco, police said. He was listed in good condition.
About 8:15 p.m., officers responding to a call of a person shot in Austin found a 15-year-old boy on a sidewalk in the 800 block of North Central with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
Five minutes before that, a 24-year-old man was wounded in a Jeffery Manor drive-by shooting on the South Side. About 8:10 p.m., he was sitting in front of a home in the 2500 block of East 97th Place when someone opened fire from a passing van, police said. The man was hit in the ankle and taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition.
About 8 p.m., a man showed up at Jackson Park Hospital saying he'd been shot in the leg in the Chatham neighborhood's 8200 block of South Vernon. His condition was stabilized, but he was uncooperative with investigators, police said.
Shortly before 8 p.m., a 33-year-old heard shots and realized he'd been hit twice in the leg in the 7400 block of South Wentworth in the South Side Park Manor neighborhood, police said. He took himself to St. Bernard in good condition.
More Englewood neighborhood gunfire left three teens wounded about 6:15 p.m. in the 2000 block of West 70th Place. They were in an alley when someone walked up, opened fire and then took off in an SUV, police said. Two 18-year-old men — one shot in the hand, the other in the arm and chest — were taken to Christ Medical Center, along with a 17-year-old boy shot in the leg. Their conditions were all stabilized, police said.
About 4:30 p.m., someone walked up to a 16-year-old boy in the 3000 block of West Flournoy in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side and shot him in the leg, police said. He was in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Fifteen minutes earlier, another teen was shot in a gang-related drive-by attack in Austin. The 17-year-old was walking about 4:15 p.m. in the 200 block of South Central when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, hitting him in the chest, leg and arm, police said. The boy later showed up at West Suburban Medical Center, where was listed in critical condition.
About 2 p.m., a 32-year-old man walked into West Suburban saying he'd been shot in the toe at 2 a.m. in front of a home in the 900 block of North Lawndale in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was in good condition.
About 5:30 a.m., a 32-year-old man drove himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital after being shot in the head and arm in the 2900 block of West Montrose in the Northwest Side Albany Park neighborhood. His condition was stabilized, police said.
The day's first shooting happened just after midnight in Little Village. A 16-year-old boy was walking down the street in the 2100 block of South Trumbull when a vehicle drove up and someone inside shot him in the ankle. His condition was stabilized at Saint Anthony Hospital.
Monday's shootings followed a weekend in which five men were killed and at least 36 others were wounded in Chicago shootings.
