Hornets Top Bulls In OT, 108-104

(CBS) Jerian Grant hit a 3-pointer late in regulation to tie it, but the Bulls fell 108-104 to the Hornets at the United Center on Monday night in their penultimate tuneup before the regular season starts.

Jimmy Butler led Chicago with 15 points, while Doug McDermott added 14. Grant, Taj Gibson and Isaiah Canaan each had 12 points. The Bulls played their second unit in crunch time, with Grant canning a 3-pointer to tie it at 98-all with 10.9 seconds left in regulation, while the Hornets went with the first string late in regulation before turning to reserves in overtime.

Gibson continued to make his case for the starting power forward spot, scoring 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and adding six rebounds in 17 minutes. His main competition for the starting job didn't make it through the game, as Niko Mirotic suffered a lower back strain in the third quarter and didn't return. Mirotic was scoreless on 0-of-4 shooting.

Rajon Rondo had two points on 1-of-7 shooting to go with 10 assists.

The Bulls (3-3) play the Hawks in Omaha on Thursday night in their preseason finale before opening the regular season on Oct. 27 at home against the Celtics.
