2 Arrested After Shootout With Chicago Cops Leads To Chase Into Alsip
CHICAGO (CBS) -- What began with a gunshot turned into a chase, a car crash, and a very tense morning for police in Chicago and Alsip, where schools were closed amid a search for one of the suspects.
Around 2:40 a.m., Chicago police officers on patrol heard gunfire coming from the 11800 block of South Lowe Avenue, police said. When they arrived on the scene, the officers saw someone inside a gray sedan shooting at a group of people standing outside.
Officers confronted the shooters, and at least one person inside the car opened fire on the police. At least one officer returned fire as the shooters drove away, but no one was struck.
Police chased the sedan for about four miles, until the driver headed down a dead-end street at 119th and Kostner in Alsip. With no way to get out, the driver crashed into a garage door, and three people inside bailed out.
"There had to be, I don't know, 12, 13 different cop cars … flying around, chasing some little sedan," witness Don Lowry said. "There they were back there, took a walk back, and they crashed into somebody's garage."
Officers captured two of the suspects, but the third remained on the loose Thursday morning, prompting a manhunt on the ground and in the air. Alsip School District 126 canceled all classes on Thursday as a precaution.
Police said a 22-year old man was shot in the leg when the suspects initially opened fire in West Pullman, but no one else was wounded when police and the suspects exchanged shots. That man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police recovered a weapon at 119th and Kostner.
