Riney entered active-duty service in July 2012 as a petroleum supply specialist. He was last assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, since December 2012.

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July 2014 to February 2015 and from Operation Freedom's Sentinel June to October 2016, the Defense Department said.
