Three Facing Charges After Man Shot By Officer In Englewood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three men after facing charges after one was shot by a Chicago Police officer Sunday morning in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

About 10 a.m., officers on patrol near 59th Place and Princeton pulled over a vehicle with stolen license plates, according to Mia Sissac, a spokeswoman for the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates Chicago officers' use of force.

Three man got out of the car and ran before "engaging" the officers, Sissac said. One of them "confronted an officer with a weapon," according to a CPD statement.

One officer opened fire, hitting the man multiple times, Sissac said. He was hit in the "lower extremities," CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he remained Monday morning, Gugliemi said.

The other two men were arrested, and two guns were recovered, authorities said. All three suspects are convicted felons, Guglielmi said.

Dejuan Harris, 22, of the 6700 block of South Emerald was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault of a peace officer with weapon, according to police. Harris is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 31.

Devon Freeman, 24, of the 8000 block of South Hermitage was charged with possession of cannabis and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said. He is also scheduled to appear court Oct. 31.

Deleon Dixon, 24, of the 5500 block of South Paulina was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving on a suspended license, street gang contact while on parole and failing to display state registration, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 16.

The officers involved in the shooting will be put on desk duty for 30 days per CPD policy.
