3-Year-Old Boy Seriously Injured In Chicago Lawn Hit-And-Run

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 3-year-old boy was struck by a car and seriously injured Monday evening in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Now the family and police are asking for help.

3-year-old Patrick Zbylut was out Monday night trick-or-treating with his family when a car plowed into the group.

Around 6:15 p.m. the family was walking in a crosswalk at 63rd and Natchez, when Patrick was struck by a car that then turned onto Harlem Avenue, Chicago Police said.

The boy is in critical condition Tuesday night at Loyola Medical Center. Police are passing out fliers, hoping someone will lead them to the driver.

"We are asking the community for their help," police said.

"It is sad to know what happen to this little kid," said Aracely Solis. "It is even sad that the person who did it, did not stop, just left. Left him there."

Neighbors tried to comfort the boy's parents.

"I was just trying to get her to breathe," said Solis. "She was hyperventilating."

Patrick is at Loyola Hospital fighting for his life.

"We're hoping he's going to make it," said Thomas Rykala, the victim's uncle. "Just praying to God right now."

Rykala speaks for his brother, Patrick's father. The family is from Poland.

"We're just pleading with anyone who can help us," Rykala said.

Neighbors said the drivers on their street often go too fast.

"They don't care if there are people trying to cross with kids," said Virginia Padilla. "They don't care if it's an old person trying to walk with kids. Flying down here."

Now one driver, described as a young man behind the wheel of this beige or tan older car has hit a 3-year-old child who was trick-or-treating.

"Be a man," Rykala said. "Be a man and turn yourself in. Let's get this over with. There's a kid out there who's fighting for his life."

Police said the four door, tan or beige car, possibly a Toyota Corolla, was last seen going west on 63rd street toward Harlem Avenue.

If you have any information you're urged to call police at the Major Accident Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521.
