The Bernstein Brief: OK, What Now?

By Dan Bernstein--
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) The Cubs still won the World Series. I know this because the blocks around Wrigley Field were, as of Sunday, still teeming with revelers. It's not so much in the crazy party way as it is the just wear-Cubs-stuff-and-mill-around way, but the mass psychological phenomenon is proving powerful and interesting in its obvious depth. It keeps resonating enough for some to keep coming here.

But it's actually over, as much as it can be with baseball's GM meetings starting Monday and immediate futures of players being determined. Right-hander Jason Hammel is already a free agent, is what I mean.

There are other Chicago teams, with whom I have checked in during all this, and here's what I can tell.

The mismatched Bulls are bad after being good, and Jimmy Butler needed just six games to openly complain about the team's effort, which we're conditioned to take as a shot at the laid-back style of coach Fred Hoiberg. So here we go with that.

The Blackhawks have a bunch of guys whose names I know, some whose names I recognize and some new names -- two of which remind me of applesauce and chicken fat.

And the Bears jut did us a huge favor by not playing on a memorably gorgeous November day. We'll get to them.
