Man Killed, 11 Wounded In Chicago Shootings Thursday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Twelve people were shot in separate attacks across Chicago on Thursday, leaving one dead.

The homicide happened about 4:15 p.m. in the Lawndale neighborhood.

A light-colored vehicle pulled up to three men standing outside in the 1300 block of South Homan and someone inside fired shots, hitting 22-year-old Javoun Burnes in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Burnes, of the 1900 block of West Ogden, died at Mount Sinai Hospital at 6 p.m.

Additionally, an 18-year-old man shot in the leg was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. A 20-year-old man hit in the buttocks was taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 9:45 p.m. in the Woodlawn neighborhood. A 42-year-old man heard gunshots in the 1400 block of East Marquette and realized he'd been struck in the leg, police said. His condition was stabilized at Stroger.

Just before 9 p.m., someone in a minivan fired shots at a 17-year-old boy in the 1100 block of North Pine in Austin, hitting him in the abdomen, police said. He took himself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park and was transferred in serious condition to Stroger.

About 7 p.m., an acquaintance of a 25-year-old man found him on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds in the 2900 block of West Wilcox in East Garfield Park, and then drove him to Stroger where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

Two men were shot about 5:30 p.m. in Englewood. The 20- and 23-year-old were on a sidewalk in the 300 block of West 57th Street when someone got out of a gray car and shot each in the left leg, police said. They were taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.

Fifteen minutes earlier, a woman was critically wounded in a Back of the Yards shooting.

The 43-year-old was standing in front of a home in the 4800 block of South Winchester when a dark blue minivan drove by and shot her in the back of the neck. The woman, who wasn't the intended target, was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, police said.

At 12:35 p.m., another 17-year-old boy was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He was standing on a corner in the 3800 block of West Wilcox when a gunman walked out of an alley and shot him in the leg. His condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai, police said.

About 10:30 a.m., a blue car pulled up to a 31-year-old woman in the 1500 block of West 62nd Street in West Englewood and someone inside shot her in the big toe, police said. She was taken to St. Bernard in good condition.

Thurday's first shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. in Roseland, where a 34-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 10700 block of South Eggleston and taken in good condition to Roseland Community Hospital, police said.

Twelve more people were shot across the city on Wednesday.
