Police: 2 Killed, 8 Wounded In City Shootings Since Friday Night

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Ten people were shot since Friday night on the South and West sides of the city, leaving two men dead, according to Chicago Police.

The most recent fatal shooting happened early Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. Officers responding to reports of shots fired at 3:21 a.m. found the 31-year-old man lying in an alley in the 100 block of South California, police said. He had been shot in the head, left arm and left leg. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 31-year-old man was shot to death about 2 a.m. in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was driving in the 6800 block of South Springfield when someone outside fired shots, hitting him in the chest, police said. He was driven to Holy Cross Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner's office did not have information on either death.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened at 8:34 a.m. Saturday in the South Chicago neighborhood. A 26-year-old man was standing outside in the 8300 block of South Colfax when a male emerged from a gangway nearby and started shooting, according to police. The shooter then ran away eastbound. The man suffered two gunshot wounds to the lower back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member and the shooting is thought to be gang-related.

Nearly 40 minutes earlier, two men were wounded in a shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. The shooting happened at 7:53 a.m. in the 4400 block of West Monroe, according to preliminary information from police. An 18-year-old man was shot in the right arm while the other man, 21, suffered two graze wounds to the back. They drove themselves to Loretto Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

A 20-year-old man was shot about 4 a.m. Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood while he was driving to pick up his mother from Norwegian American Hospital, police said. A black SUV pulled alongside him in the 3000 block of West Division and someone inside shot him in the back. He joined his mom at the hospital in good condition.

About 3 a.m., four people walked up and knocked on the door of a West Pullman neighborhood apartment in the 12400 block of South Normal. When a 26-year-old man opened the door, one of the visitors opened fire, hitting him and a 20-year-old woman inside, police said. Both suffered leg wounds and were taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition.

About 11 p.m. Friday, a 23-year-old man was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle at a stop sign in the 5700 block of South Kilbourn in the West Elsdon neighborhood when a white car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. A bullet grazed his head and he was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

The weekend's first shooting happened about 10 p.m. in the Gresham neighborhood, where a 23-year-old man heard gunfire in the 8700 block of South Elizabeth and realized he'd been hit in the thigh. His condition was stabilized at Christ Medical Center, police said.

Police announced a joint effort with the FBI, Illinois State Police and Cook County sheriff's office to target drug sales and gang violence this weekend on the South and West sides. Last weekend, 51 people were shot in Chicago, nine of them fatally.
