Police: Three Killed, 22 Wounded In Chicago Gun Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people have been killed and 22 others wounded in shootings since Friday night across the city, according to Chicago Police.

The most recent fatal shooting happened early Sunday outside a gas station in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, according to Chicago Police.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot in the 4800 block of West Madison at 1:59 a.m. found the man, thought to be in his 20s, with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and chest.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality early Sunday.

At 3:21 a.m. Saturday morning, a man was shot to death in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. Officers responding to reports of shots fired found the 31-year-old lying in an alley in the 100 block of South California, police said. He had been shot in the head, left arm and left leg. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another 31-year-old man was shot to death a little more than an hour earlier in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was driving in the 6800 block of South Springfield about 2 a.m. when someone outside fired shots, hitting him in the chest, police said. He was driven to Holy Cross Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner's office did not have additional information on both fatalities Saturday morning.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened at 5:34 a.m. Sunday morning in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

A 36-year-old man was driving in the 5300 block of South Calumet at 5:34 a.m. when he was shot in the arm, according to Chicago Police. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. He was being uncooperative with investigators Sunday morning.

At least 21 other people have been shot since Friday night.

Also this weekend, police announced a joint effort with the FBI, Illinois State Police and Cook County sheriff's office to target drug sales and gang violence on the South and West sides.

Last weekend, 51 people were shot in Chicago, nine of them fatally.
