Cubs Add 4 More To 40-Man Roster

(CBS) After picking up reliever David Rollins off waivers from the Mariners earlier in the day, the Cubs added four more players to their 40-man roster prior to the deadline Friday night.

Chicago added the contracts of left-hander Jack Leathersich from Triple-A Iowa, catcher Victor Caratini from Double-A Tennessee, outfielder Jacob Hannemann from Double-A and right-handed Duane Underwood from Single-A Myrtle Beach. Each player is now protected from the Rule 5 Draft that will take place in early December.

Leathersich, 26, pitched at rookie ball, Double-A and Triple-A in 2015. At Triple-A Iowa, he allowed no runs in five relief appearances. He had a 3.48 ERA at Double-A.

Caratini, 23, hit .291 with six homers, 47 RBIs and a .780 OPS at Double-A. He was also a Southern League All-Star. He was selected in the second round by the Braves in the 2013 amateur draft and acquired in the July 2014 deal that sent Emilio Bonifacio and James Russell to Atlanta.

Hannemann, 25, hit .247 with 10 homers, 30 RBIs, 26 stolen bases and a .752 OPS in 74 games at Double-A. The Cubs took him in the third round of the 2013 draft.

Underwood, 22, was 0-6 with a 4.32 ERA in 18 starts with four teams in the Cubs' system in 2016, a season in which he was plagued by injuries early on. The Cubs took him in the second round of the 2012 draft. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 4 prospect in the Cubs' system entering 2016.
