Vandals Deface Books About Islam At Evanston Library

(CBS) – North suburban police are trying to figure out who defaced seven books about Islam at the Evanston Public Library.

Swastikas and hateful messages were written inside books about the Quran. Librarians discovered the offensive graffiti when they were preparing for a lecture Monday night about Islam.

"We're inclusive and we are a welcoming, thoughtful community, and so to think that hateful messages were put in books at the Evanston Public Library was very surprising," Library Director Karen Danczak says.

She says the library does not have surveillance cameras in that part of the building.

The library plans to replace the defaced books.
