CHICAGO (CBS) — A Chicago police officer shot and killed a man, who shot two other people earlier, killing one of the victims early Friday in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side, according to police.
It happened outside the Sky Box sports bar just after midnight. Police said officers were on patrol in the 11th District when they heard shots fired around 12:25 a.m. near Harrison and Central Park Avenue.
When they arrived, they saw a gunman shooting. That is when the officers opened fire and fatally shot him. CBS 2’s Susanna Song reports.
The gunman shot two other people, one died from his injuries. The other was taken to a local area hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed one adult was pronounced dead at the scene, but did not immediately have information on the other death.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
Family members showed up to the scene. It was unclear who they were related to, but they are certainly grieving the death of a loved one.
No officers were injured. The nightclub has four surviellance cameras, two on each side of the building. CBS 2 reached out to the own who said he handed over all videos to the police. Also a business across the street has one camera facing the club, but we are uncertain if anything was captured.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the use of force.
The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on desk duty for 30 days, per CPD policy.
It was the city’s second fatal police-involved shooting in just over 24 hours, and the third in a week.
