After Tragedy, NW Indiana Mom On Mission: Raise Awareness Of CO Poisoning

(CBS) -- Her daughter died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Now, a Northwest Indiana mother is determined to help save others.

CBS 2's Audrina Bigos found out more about her fight for new laws in this Original Report.

Twenty-two-year-old Lindsey had just graduated college. She left home in Indiana to start her career in Arizona and moved into her own place.

Dorothy Kesling says: "They found her at 8 o clock in the morning on the floor in her bathroom."

Kesling calls it the silent killer. Lindsey was overcome by carbon monoxide in the fumes that filled her apartment.

"The garage being under the apartment, she forgot to turn the car off," she says.

That was in November 2010. Since then, Kesling started the Lindsey O'Brien Kesling Wishing Well Foundation.

She's raising awareness and giving out free and low-cost CO alarms.

Now, her fight is political. She wants a city mandate in La Porte: CO alarms in all residential units.

"It makes perfect sense that La Porte be the first city in the state of Indiana to pioneer," the mom says. "It's Lindsey's hometown. It's her birthplace. Somebody needs to step forward and set the precedent."

The city council will consider the measure Monday.
