John Lackey Is Boers & Bernstein's 2016 Quote Of The Year Winner

(CBS) Just weeks after winning a World Series championship, Cubs right-hander John Lackey has won another (really, really prestigious) honor.

Lackey on Wednesday evening was voted the winner of the Boers and Bernstein Show's 15th annual Quote of the Year competition for his hilarious explanation that he didn't come to Chicago to get a haircut. Lackey won in what's believed to be the closest vote in the competition's storied history, as he garnered 17 percent of the ballots among the eight finalists, edging out president-elect Donald Trump, who received 16 percent for a puzzling reference to the late Joe Paterno. The two were separated by 27 votes.

Lackey's quote came in early August as the Cubs had established themselves as baseball's best team.

"Great expectations? I mean, we're trying to win a World Series," Lackey said. "I didn't come here for a haircut. We're trying to get it on. I came here for jewelry."
