Motorist Fatally Shot In North Austin Was 73-Year-Old Naperville Retiree

(CBS) – The 73-year-old motorist fatally shot in Chicago's North Austin neighborhood Friday was a retired insurance agent from west suburban Naperville.

Family members say Ronald L. Allen once ran an Allstate agency in the Austin area and had kept ties with the neighborhood.

He was shot to death while driving his car in the 1300 block of North Laramie Friday morning. Shots were fired in Allen's direction. He crashed into two parked cars.

The 73-year-old died at the scene.

"That area is where he's from, and he's very comfortable in that area," son Keith Allen says. "He was coming back from a friend's house, and it's unfortunate what happened."

Allen was a man of many accomplishments. He wrote a book about the history of bid whist, a card game. He was also honored by numerous community groups for his work in Chicago and Naperville.

"It is so important that we continue his legacy," daughter Vera Allen says. "This is not about vengeance, this is not about 'I need to get somebody.'"
