Jim Callis Gives Scouting Report On Yoan Moncada: Potential To Be 'Robinson Cano With More Speed'

(CBS) The White Sox agreed to a blockbuster deal Tuesday that marked the start of a rebuild, moving ace left-hander Chris Sale to the Red Sox for a return that was headlined by 21-year-old second baseman Yoan Moncada, ranked by many as the top prospect in the game.

So what are the White Sox getting in Moncada? MLB.com and MLBpipeline.com writer Jim Callis joined the Spiegel and Goff Show to give a scouting report on Moncada, after he called the big trade "a pretty good deal" for the White Sox.

"He's the best or one of the very best prospects in baseball," Callis said of Moncada.

"The upper praise the guys have been saying about this guy since he signed is Robinson Cano with more speed. You don't even need the more speed when it comes to Robinson Cano. That's a nice little bonus."

The switch-hitting Moncada hit .294 with 15 homers, 62 RBIs, 45 stolen bases and a .918 OPS in 106 games across two levels in the minor leagues in 2016.

"Tremendous bat speed, he's better from the left side of the plate," Callis said.

"He has well-above average speed, he's got power. You know, the defense is kind of average.

"You could be talking about a guy who hits .270 with 20-plus homers and 40-plus steals and plays in the middle infield. Even he doesn't, even if he winds up in the outfield, that'd be a pretty good player. He's a very, very, very exciting player."

Listen to Callis' full interview below. He also shares his thoughts on 20-year-old right-hander Michael Kopech, who can hit triple digits on the radar gun and whom Callis considers a "blue chipper" as well.
