Cubs Acquire Lefty Reliever Caleb Smith From Brewers
(CBS) The Cubs on Thursday acquired left-handed reliever Caleb Smith from the Brewers for cash considerations.
The 25-year-old Smith has a career 3.40 across four minor league seasons. He all of 2016 at Double-A Trenton, where he had a 3.96 ERA in 27 appearances.
The Brewers had selected Smith from the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday before moving him to the Cubs, who passed on their selection in the draft. Chicago did lose a player in the Rule 5 Draft, as Atlanta nabbed 28-year-old right-hander Armando Rivero, who spent 2016 at Triple-A Iowa.
In the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 Draft, the Cubs took infielder Kevin Cornelius from the Yankees with the 30th pick in the first round. The 24-year-old Cornelius hit .299 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs in 56 games split between rookie league and Single-A last season. The Yankees took him in the 31st round of the 2013 amateur draft.
