Fatal House Fire May Have Been Sparked By Christmas Display: Official

(CBS) -- The Chicago Fire Department is investigating a Southwest Side house fire that killed a man and his dog on Tuesday morning.

The fire was in a home near Midway Airport, in the 5700 block of West 63rd Place.

Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford says there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

"According to a woman who was able to get out, the family dog started barking and alerted that there was a fire," he says. "She was able to get out but the gentleman was not able to get out, and apparently the dog stayed with him and also perished in the fire."

Langford says the cause of the fire is still under investigation but adds the fire may have started in a Christmas display in a front room of the house.
