Frigid Temperatures Continue; Heavy Snow Coming This Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Get ready for a one-two punch from Mother Nature. Bitter cold already has arrived, and lots of snow is expected this weekend.

Temperatures Friday morning were well below normal on Friday; the high was expected to be about 24 in Chicago, when it's normally around 37 at this time of year.

The weekend won't be much better, and also will bring two rounds of snow, starting Saturday night.

The first round of snow, arriving Saturday night, could bring 4 to 6 inches on the North Side and in the north and northwest suburbs. Most of the rest of the city and the west and southwest suburbs could get 3 to 4 inches, while the far south and far southwest suburbs could get 1-3 inches.

Sunday morning should bring a bit of a break from the snow, but a second round is expected to hit Sunday evening through Monday morning.

By the time both snow storms have finished, the North Side and northern and northwestern suburbs could see 8 to 12 inches of snow, the rest of the city and most of the south and west suburbs and most of northwest Indiana could see 6 to 8 inches, and areas further south could see 3 to 6 inches.

After the weekend's snowstorms, even more frigid temperatures are on the way in the middle of next week, as highs could be in the single digits on Wednesday and Thursday. More light snow also is possible again on Tuesday.
