Chicago Area Snowstorm Leads To Canceled Flights At O'Hare, Midway
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Flights at both O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport have been canceled Saturday and Sunday ahead of the weekend snowstorm.
As of Sunday morning at 11 a.m., O'Hare had a total of 1221 flights listed as canceled, and Midway had a total of 175 flight listed as canceled, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
Both airports listed delays under 15 minutes.
Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Midway Airport tweets that Southwest has preemptively canceled many Saturday night and Sunday morning flights.
Since Saturday afternoon, about 3.5 inches of snow have blanketed the city, according to the National Weather Service.
Flight cancellations came after the National Weather Service announced a Winter Storm Warning.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for DuPage, Cook, Will, Porter, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, LaSalle, Kendall and Grundy counties until midnight Sunday night.
Snow will become heavy at times, developing by Saturday evening and continuing throughout the night through Sunday, before diminishing Sunday evening.
The heaviest snow totals are expected north of I-80 where storm totals of 7 to 12 inches are likely by Sunday evening. Snow amounts should tapper off south of I-80 into the 3 to 6 inch range across far southern sections of the warning area, where the snow could mix with rain later Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Isolated higher amounts are possible in some areas.
Monday's forecast has a high of 28 degrees, with a low of 18 degrees. Tuesday has a high of 21 degrees, with a low of 7 degrees. By mid-week, extreme cold temperatures hit hard with Wednesdays high of 11 degrees, with a low of 2 degrees. Wind chills will make it feel even colder.
