Aurora Divers Rescue Dog And Pet Owner From Icy Pond

(CBS) – First-responders in Aurora lift a dog out of a half-frozen pond after the pet and the animal's owner fall through the ice.

Emergency crews arrived, thanks to the quick-thinking of an 8-year-old who called 9-1-1.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports.

Once the golden lab was stranded in the water, mom didn't think twice. She opened a shed, grabbed a canoe and headed out into the pond herself.

Trapped in the middle of the icy water: 11-year-old Bailey, a Golden Lab with a ton of fight.

"She went running after the ducks," owner Cathy Medernach says. "I just wanted to get close to her and let her know it's OK, it's OK."

Medernach trekked out onto those icy waters in a canoe, using a broom for an oar.

"As soon as I took that first brush through, I fell in," she says.

Both became trapped in the dangerously cold water.

"I'm like, 'I can't die like this, I can't let her die like this, I'm not gonna die like this,'" Medernach says.

Luckily, her 8-year-old son, Caden, called 9-1-1.

"Many kudos to him for being able to keep a calm head, follow the instructions," Fire Marshal Javon Cross says.

Within minutes of the dive team arriving, Medernach and her dog were back on shore. It was a close call -- and a reminder to stay off the ice.

"We are the professionals, so leave that up to us," Cross says.

Medernach says she would get in that canoe again to save her dog. But she adds she would probably call 9-1-1 first.
