CBS 2's Ed Curran Tests Battery-Operated Heated Clothing

CHICAGO (CBS) – What if you could block out the cold with a blast of heat inside your coat, gloves or boots?

It is gear like no-other and wired to keep you warm. CBS 2's Ed Curran put this battery operated clothing to the test.

Seriously cold weather is on the way, and you have to make sure you are dressed for it. Although layers may be nice, a little voltage in your clothing may be a better route to take.

Imagine boots that contain heat.

"What you have here is a disc, put by the ball of the foot area," said Dennis Lovick, Viking Ski Shop in Chicago. "It can be placed into a ski boot; it can be placed into any foot bed whatsoever."

Powered by a battery pack, the disc promises to keep your toes toasty warm for hours. The discs are sold for about $250.

And when the weather is in the single digits, why not try heated gloves that have small batteries and a magic button.

"You see the glow, that is you lowest heat," Lovick said. "You go to the next one, all of a sudden it glows orange, a little bit hotter, go to the next one, it's red."

The battery operated heated gloves retail at $350.

One of the most high-tech clothing of its kind is a jacket from Ravean. It is heated by a battery pack mounted in the jacket. It includes gloves, which attached to the jacket, that are also heated. The items are all controlled by a device inside the lapel with a low, medium and high setting. The jacket's hood it also removable.

On its hottest setting, the battery in the jacket lasts about two-and-a-half hours before you need to recharge it.

The jacket is even capable of charging a cell phone. The Ravean heated jacket and gloves retails at about $300. It was a Kickstarter hit, raising $250,000.
