Residents Complain About More Chicago Mail Mixups

(CBS) – Our email inbox is overflowing following a story spotlighting mail mixups in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

We had people from other communities reach out, saying they're experiencing the same problem.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.

Susan Irion lives in the Irving Park neighborhood. She shows us magazines her mail carrier delivered to her. The problem is, they aren't hers.

"I regularly walk this guy's mail over on the next block," she says.

"It's the same house number but a different street?" Le Mignot asks.

"Exactly," Irion replies.

Mitchelle Kmiec lives in Jefferson Park. She noticed the same thing Irion did.

"I have seen quite a few different carriers," Irion says.

"I had a regular guy, he was a couple months, then it was back to substitutes. Then I got another regular and now he's on medical leave. So, I'm back to substitutes," Kmiec says.

Kmiec was so fed up, she contacted Congressman Mike Quigley.

"The problems do come often, from substitute carriers, who don't know the unique qualities and idiosyncrasies of a route," he says. "I think the solution to this is enhanced training."

A postal spokesperson says customers can call a toll-free number to report problems:

"There are times when a route may be covered by multiple carriers, but we expect the same level of service for all our customers. Certainly during the winter months and especially the holidays, we hire additional people because the increase in mail volumes and we train our temporary personnel accordingly.  If a customer has a concern about their mail, they should call 1 800-275-8777.  That will log the concern and give us the opportunity to address the issue privately with that customer."
