Three Killed, Two Injured In High-Speed Crash In Posen
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were killed and two others were injured early Thursday, when a speeding car crashed into several parked vehicles in south suburban Posen.
Police said they don't yet know exactly how fast the BMW sedan was going at the time of the crash, but said they believe it was speeding on a residential street with a 20 mph limit around 3 a.m. when the driver lost control in the 14300 block of Harrison Avenue.
The BMW struck several parked vehicles, causing extensive damage to both the BMW and the cars it hit.
The male driver had four female passengers in the car with him. All four were ejected.
"When the officers get here, they find the victims ejected from the cars," Posen Police Chief Doug Hoglund said.
Three of the victims who were ejected from the BMW died.
The driver and one of the females survived. They were taken to the emergency room at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Police said they aren't sure whether any of the five people in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Octavio Camacho's Chevy Trailblazer was one of the parked vehicles damaged in the wreck. He said he couldn't even recognize his SUV after the crash, due to the massive amount of damage.
Camacho wasn't worried so much about his property, but about the lives that were lost, and the fact that there was so little he or anyone else could do to help the victims.
"I saw them not really moving, you know what I mean? If you're coming out of a car flying that fast, you see blood and stuff," he said. "There was a cop telling one of the girls to keep breathing."
None of the victims names had been released as of late Thursday morning, but one witness, who gave his name only as Ovi, said the victims all appeared to be quite young.
"There are three families that are mourning now. Young kids, that's so sad," he said.
Hoglund said the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team was investigating the crash, but he said it appeared alcohol was involved.
