7 Elementary Students Fall Ill After Ingesting "Homemade Narcotic"

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Seven children fell ill Friday morning at an elementary school in the South Shore neighborhood, after taking some kind of homemade narcotic.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to South Shore Fine Arts Academy at 1415 E. 70th St. around 10:20 a.m. after seven children became ill. Police said the students -- three 13-year-old boys and four 12-year-old girls -- ingested a "homemade narcotic concoction."

Five students were taken to Comer Children's Hospital as a precaution, fire officials said. Two others were released to their parents. Police said all seven students were in good condition.

"School staff responded promptly this morning after several students were observed ingesting an unknown substance. School officials contacted 911, and emergency services providers responded to evaluate the situation," Chicago Public Schools spokesman Michael Passman said.

Police said they did not yet know what type of narcotic was involved.
