1 Dead, Suspect In Custody After Standoff In Little Village

Updated 02/20/17 - 1:40 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 68-year-old man was found dead, and a 37-year-old man was taken into custody, after a standoff that lasted more than four hours in the Little Village neighborhood on Monday.

Chicago Police News Affairs said police responded to a domestic disturbance involving a 37-year-old man and a 68-year-old man in the 3400 block of West 23rd Street around 7:45 a.m.

There were reports of shots fired inside the home, and officers later called for a SWAT team. Negotiators used loudspeakers to communicate with the suspect in the house.

Shortly after noon, police said the situation had ended, and the 68-year-old man had been found dead inside the home, with a gunshot wound to the head. The 37-year-old man was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered from the home.

Chicago police originally said the situation appeared to involve an off-duty University Park police officer, but University Park Police Chief John Pate said the man involved is not and never has been a University Park employee, but instead used to work for a security company that provided security for a University Park apartment complex. However, Pate said that man was fired two years ago, and now works for a different security company.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
