Chicago Police Officer Shot In Back Of The Yards; Suspects In Custody

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was shot Friday afternoon during an "armed confrontation" in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony GUglielmi said the female officer was shot in the leg at 46th and Ashland. Officials said the shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m.

Guglielmi said the officer was taken to Mercy Hospital and was then transferred to Stroger Hospital.

The officer's injuries were not considered to be life-threatening and she could be released later today, officials said.

Two people were in custody.

Mayor Emanuel spoke with the officer, who is an avid runner. In fact, the two ran together when the officer was at the police academy. Doctors said the injury will not affect her running in the future.
