11-Year-Old Northwestern Indiana Boy Dies After Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) - Authorities say an 11-year-old northwestern Indiana boy died after being shot in the head.

It happened at Nunez Park in East Chicago, Indiana on Saturday.

The Cook County, Illinois, Medical Examiner's Office says David Anderson of East Chicago died Sunday at a Chicago hospital.

"My baby is dead and no one is in jail," cried Latonya Anderson, the boy's mother.

Latonya Anderson, comforted by two of her sons, says she's left with a giant hole tonight, as she mourns the loss of her middle child, David Anderson.

"David was a little allstar. David loves basketball. He ate, slept, dreamed, wanted to be in the NBA. All of that, took away on May 5," said the boy's mother.

"He's only 11 years old," said Brandon Neeley, David's cousin. "He was just a loving kid, liked to crack jokes, just an all-around good kid."

Police say two other children were fighting Saturday evening when a gunshot rang out and the boy fell to the ground.

Police have no one in custody.

"Please catch him. Get my baby some justice. He deserves it," said Latonya Anderson.

School City of East Chicago Superintendent Paige McNulty says Anderson was a student at George Washington Elementary School, where grief counselors for students and teachers will be

provided all week. She says the death is "a tragic loss for our school district and for Washington Elementary."

Students brought stuffed animals and flowers, mourning the sudden loss alongside the Anderson family.

Anyone with information is asked to contact East Chicago Police.
