The leak happened just before 11 p.m. near 80th Street and Crandon Avenue. A 20- to 24-inch underground main was leaking, filling the air with the smell of gas, and creating some tense moments as neighbors were told to evacuate their homes.
About 12:25 a.m., a 19-year-old woman driving an SUV eastbound on 79th Street near Crandon Avenue swerved to avoid a crash with a westbound vehicle and struck a commercial building, police said.
The most recent shooting occurred about 1:50 a.m. Friday when a 25-year-old woman was shot in the leg in the 6600 block of North Sheridan Road.
