The fire started around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in a vacant three-flat in the 7900 block of South Drexel Avenue. When crews arrived, nearby hydrants were frozen solid, so the Fire Department had to call in Water Management Department crews to heat the hydrants with steam, and get water flowing.
Crews responded about 10:30 p.m. to the blaze at the 18-unit building in the 9800 block of Sayre Avenue. Firefighters were met by heavy flames showing from the back of the second story and spreading to the roof. A second alarm was called for the fire due to the sloppy winter weather and a frozen fire hydrant.
The fire started around 9 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of Beck Avenue in South Elgin.
