An agreement on the toll charge has not been reached. Indiana plans to partner with a developer to build the highway as a toll road primarily for truck traffic. The highway is estimated to cost about $300 million.
The public-private development would fund the proposed Illiana toll road, a 47-mile east-west road connecting Interstate 55 near Wilmington, Ill., and Interstate 65 near Lowell, Ind.
Chicago environmental groups filed a lawsuit Thursday to stop the proposed $1.3 billion Illiana Tollway linking northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, claiming the Illinois Department of Transportation doesn’t have authority to develop it.
The Illiana Corridor would stretch from Interstate 55 to Indiana’s Interstate 65, linking Will County and Indiana’s Lake County.
The Illiana Expressway zoomed into the fast lane Thursday with support coming at about a 3-1 margin from the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission.

Do or die time is nearing for the Illiana Expressway. WBBM’s Veronica Carter reports there are a couple of key votes coming up this month that will either set the project in motion or send it back to the drawing board.
IDOT hopes to have some final issues resolved with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state and federal environmental protection agencies and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by the end of this month.
