Longer School Year
It’s been a bit more than a year on the job for Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard. Some critics have said it’s been a bumpy, road with many obstacles ahead for Brizard – including a potential teachers’ strike.
Despite complaints from teachers that it would lead to student burnout and decreased teacher morale, the Chicago Board of Education has unanimously approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to extend the school year by 10 days starting in the fall.
Chicago Public School officials were moving forward with plans for a longer school day and year starting next year, but the Chicago Teachers Union balked at joining an advisory panel being formed to help implement the longer school day.
