No worries if you find that your apartment barely has enough breathing for you and Fido. Chicago and its surrounding suburbs have plenty of “dog friendly areas” where you two can go outdoors and take in the fresh air and get some exercise.
A popular beach and also the largest public one in Chicago, Montrose Beach is located near the Uptown neighborhood. It has fun activities for everyone in the family including the dog.
How can back-to-school sales benefit you? Let me count the ways! Just because you might not have a child or a kid heading off to college doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of all the great deals that are out there.
Are you up for a little game of trivia? If you were awesome at Trivial Pursuit and know a lot of random facts about a lot of random things, then you need to head to one of Chicago’s trivia nights. Read ahead for some top bars to head to for your trivia fix.
Before you know it, fall will be blowing into Chicago. So enjoy the last two months or so of nice weather while you can; and what better way to do it than enjoying either lunch or dinner outside along the Chicago River. I may be bias, but I think sitting alongside the river and eating lunch outside gives you some of the best views of the city with the river sparkling (although not sparkling clean) and the sun bouncing off the glass office buildings. It really makes you appreciate what a great city Chicago is.
There is a reason why Chicago is labeled as the Third Coast. With Lake Michigan at our fingertips, Chicago boasts lots of beaches up and down her shores. One of the more popular and active beaches is North Avenue. Spend a weekend there and take in what it has to offer.
July is National Blueberry Month! What better way to celebrate this momentous event than taking the family out on a day trip to pick some berries? Here are a few farms within a day’s driving distance that will let you pick their berries and take them home to make blueberry pie, blueberry jam, blueberry muffins, or to just enjoy alone.
Are you looking to make your heart just a little more happy? Better blood pressure? How about giving your skin a little more TLC? Fortunately the little thing known as chocolate can do all of that for you. Just make sure that it’s dark. Chicago has a few spots around town to help you indulge in that chocolate goodness.
You can’t have a Fourth of July without fireworks. Fortunately, Navy Pier isn’t the only place to go to watch them. Many of the Chicago suburbs are also hosting their own displays, many accompanied by food fests and as they say, “fun for the whole family.” (Except that 13-year-old who thinks everything is uncool, including fireworks.)
It’s summertime, and summertime means grilling out. Once you’ve checked to make sure the grill gas tank is full or that there’s charcoal, it’s time to go out and find a nice piece of meat to grill up. Whether you’re having a group of people over, impressing your sweetheart with your grilling skills, or treating yourself, there are a few places in Chicago that will help you find that perfect steak and maybe even give you a little extra advice on the perfect way to cook it.
Father’s Day is just around the corner and it is dad’s day to relax and do whatever he wants. Point him in the direction of these golf stores and he will be a happy camper for the next few hours while he contemplates a great excuse to buy a new set of clubs or at least the latest golf shoes. Or better yet, present him with a box of new golf balls and a print out of this list as his Father’s Day pass for good fun.
There was no other place I wanted to go to more as a kid than the Brookfield Zoo. In fact, blowing out the candles on my birthday cake involved wishing for my mom to take me to the zoo. That’s before I got smart and starting wishing for a dog. Over the past couple of years the zoo has started implementing a lot of new exhibits and homes for the animals. The best part of the zoo is that you’ll never see the same thing twice. The animals are always up to something.
Prom is right around the corner for many high schools and if you haven’t bought your dress yet, time is quickly running out. The number one thing any girl wants in her dress is for it not to match anyone else’s at prom. And I can attest, as someone who showed up at her prom in the same dress as another girl, it’s not a good feeling. Luckily my gentleman of a date that night said the right thing – you look nicer. Here are a few stores that can help you be the belle of the ball.
Why not try something different for Mother’s Day this year? Instead of a Mother’s Day brunch, a spa treatment or breakfast in bed, how about treating mom to a picnic outside to enjoy the weather and nature. Mom can kick back, relax and still enjoy spending time with her family. She’ll enjoy homemade sandwiches Dad can make with the kids, or if that’s too adventuresome there are plenty of places where you can pick up some nice sandwiches and sides to take along with you.
Summer is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate than by cruising down the lakeshore path on a bike. Across the city there are a few places to rent a bike for a day or just a few hours. If you’re from here, it’s a great way to spend a day outside. If you’re from out of town, it’s an even better and quicker way to see the city.
Tea has fabulous health benefits ranging from helping you fall asleep, lowering your cholesterol, helping with stomach issues, and lowering the risk of cancer and heart disease. There are also different types of tea including black, oolong, green, white, herbal and flavored. Spend a day learning about all sorts of animals that live in locations ranging from the Pacific Northwest to a Philippine coral reef.
Is there anything better than good Chinese food? It’s the classic take-out food for both lunch and dinner. It’s the easiest answer to, “I don’t feel like cooking tonight. How ‘bout we order Chinese food?” We probably all have our favorite restaurant, but here are the some of the stars in Chicago. Make sure to list your favorite in the comments section!
This might be my most favorite museum in Chicago. It doesn’t have the stiffness of the Field Museum and everything is hands-on. The museum has done a lot of improvements in the past couple of years to take it beyond the ‘80s style exhibits into more, flashy 21st century displays. If you haven’t been in awhile, it might be time to make a visit back to the largest science center in the Western Hemisphere to enjoy what they have to offer.
