Plans To Close Petcoke Facilities Welcome News To South Deering Neighbors

Bowing to pressure from the Emanuel administration, community activists and environmental groups, one of the two remaining storage facilities for petroleum coke shut down Tuesday — and the last is on borrowed time.

One Killed, Two Critically Injured In South Deering Crash

A car hit a fire hydrant – apparently while speeding – and then smashed into the porch of a home in the 11600 block of South Torrence Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. The car flipped on its roof in the crash.

Police: Woman Stabs Boyfriend To Death In South Deering

The 26-year-old was in a fight with his girlfriend at 1:19 a.m. when she stabbed him in the chest, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. The man was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Gaines said.

About 7:30 p.m., the 37-year-old was in the 9800 block of South Bensley Avenue when a male walked up and opened fire, striking him several times in the leg and torso, police said.

The most recent fatal shooting happened about 12:15 a.m. Monday in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood. A 26-year-old man was standing in an alley with friends in the 2100 block of North Merrimac when someone walked up, yelled gang slogans and shot him in the face, police said.

Early Saturday, a man was killed and three others were hurt in a shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. The four men were inside a vehicle about 3 a.m. when they were shot in the 4400 block of West Van Buren Street.
