The five-vehicle crash happened at 9:30 p.m. at Congress Parkway and Wells Street.
Kenard Jarrett, 20, was charged with three felony counts of burglary after he attempted to steal items from the business Wednesday about 12:20 a.m., according to a statement from Chicago Police.
The 20-year-old – posing as a nightshift crew worker – was inside the store and attempting to steal money from the cash registers, when an employee recognized him from a separate robbery at a different Mariano’s store and began chasing after him.
The suspect then ran out of the store and jumped into a Jaguar, only to crash it into a building across the store’s parking lot at 1601 S. Federal St.
Nobody was hurt when the officer discharged the gun, although a water pipe was hit, resulting in a leak that caused damage to an office.
In each case, two offenders used a knife to take cash from the register and cashier’s wallet, according to an alert issued by Area Central detectives.
Daniel Tatman, 21, caused a small explosion using an “incendiary device” and marijuana in the bathroom of his apartment in the 1200 block of South Michigan Avenue about 11 p.m., police said.
The two, whose ages were not immediately known, were transported from the blaze to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition.
