The fire at the vacant building in the 1300 block of West Cullerton Street was first reported about 3 a.m. and was upgraded to a two-alarm blaze 20 minutes later.
Authorities were called shortly after 10 p.m. to a structure fire at a home in the 15300 block of South Loomis Avenue. The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The adjacent homes were evacuated as heavy smoke spread from the fire, although flames were contained to the house where the fire started.
Firefighters discovered the body in the doorway of the vacant building in the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Street in Gary as they were extinguishing the blaze a few minutes after midnight.
City officials are still waiting for all utilities to be cut off at the site, at 32 W. 8th St., before they move forward with an emergency demolition.
According to witnesses, a white BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed while turning west onto 87th Street from Indiana Avenue, when the driver lost control, and struck a home at 77 E. 87th St. about 5:15 a.m.
Denise Warfield, 47, was found just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a building in the 7200 block of South Ashland Avenue, authorities said.
