Sarah Boulos is President of Chicago area-based support group Moms of Multiples. The organization boasts a membership of approximately 400 mothers in Chicago and the suburbs, and hosts discussions and social events for moms of twins, triplets and more. The group also organizes educational seminars on topics that have included investments and financial planning, as well as how to feed and potty train multiples. As president, Boulos oversees the organization's various committees. She is also the mother of three children.

Tap Into Your Network To Find A Babysitter

In the Chicago area, there are several resources available for parents looking for a babysitter.

"Online sources, such as sittercity and urbansitter work well because they tap into social networking," Boulos recommended. Boulos also emphasized the importance of using word-of-mouth when looking for a sitter.

"Within our own message board, we're constantly referring nannies and sitters so you can find recommendations through other members. There are so many good sitters out here, so it helps to tap into your network," she noted. However, there's some etiquette you should consider when looking for a babysitter.

"I have seen people approach sitters at the park. That's not cool. It seems like you're trying to steal a nanny or sitter from the family," Boulos said.

Look For Experience In A Babysitter

While previous childcare experience is always a plus in a potential babysitter, Boulos also noted other experience can be just as valuable.

"Someone that's been involved in sports and other activities or some sort of organized activities has expectations of being on time. Life experiences are good, including time at camps. If they play instruments, that shows self discipline and motivation," she pointed out.

Boulos also said she looked for common sense in a babysitter.

"You need someone who won't give in to the chaos. The worst thing is if you come home and everything's gone wrong."

Consider Previous Experience If You Have Twins, Triplets Or More

Parents of multiples have their own unique set of concerns when it comes to finding a babysitter with relevant experience.

"I think the number one concern is that you won't find one who can handle your set of twins or triplets. If they're not used to multiples and are trying to feed a bottle to both kids, it's difficult. Some people aren't up to the challenge," Boulos said. "I tell the sitters 'Someone is usually crying, and that's OK.' One of them is usually unhappy, and that is what happens," she said.

Communicate With Your Child's Babysitter

It's important to communicate with your child's babysitter regarding expectations and house rules.

"I'm straightforward and I will tell the sitters what to do. If they don't follow basic rules, then that won't work," Boulos said.

Introduce The Babysitter To Your Child

Boulos recommended taking some time to introduce your child to a new babysitter.

"I have the sitter come over a little earlier, maybe about 30 minutes, and I introduce them and explain what's happening. I show the sitter where everything is and I usually leave written instructions, too, and have the sitter start playing with the kids. Let them hold the baby and see what happens," she recommended.

Find A Babysitter In Your Budget

Finding a babysitter who can care for your child while you're out can be a considerable expense. Boulos recommended asking a potential babysitter what they charge to take care of your brood. If the babysitter is unsure what to charge, Boulos recommended that parents suggest a fee and see what the babysitter says.
