When thinking of things that Chicago is most famous for in the food category, the Italian beef sandwich is definitely at the top of the list. Whether you like it dry, wet or as a combo, Chicago has the finest in Italian beef.

Novi’s Beef

6746 Odgen Avenue
Berwyn, IL 60402

Novi’s Beef has been a west suburban staple since the 1960’s. This Berwyn beef stop has been featured in Chicago Magazine, and serves all your beef needs, including catering. Whether you like your beef wet or dry, you like a good combo, or an Italian sausage, Novi’s Beef has exactly what you are looking for.

Portillo’s Beef

100 W. Ontario Street
Chicago, IL 60654

Portillo’s is known for many things, such as chocolate cake, hot dogs, and cheeseburgers, but don’t pass up the beef sandwiches. I have been a fan of Portillo’s since I can remember. With locations all over the Chicagoland area and online ordering available, you can experience a beef sandwich the way it is supposed to be. Photo courtesy of

Johnnie’s Beef

7500 W. North Avenue
Elmwood Park, IL 60707

Johnnie’s Beef is legendary in the Elmwood Park area. Pull up to Johnny’s in the summer and you can be sure that you will wait in a line down the block for Italian Ice and a beef sandwich. Lunch time? Same line. Ask anyone within a 10 mile radius where the best beef sandwich is from, and Johnnie’s will win, hands down.

Buona Beef

6745 Roosevelt Road
Berwyn, IL 60402

If you want a sandwich, salad, or pizza, Buona Beef is for you. Originally serving the Chicago area since 1981, this establishment has perfected their beef and expanded to include catering, pizza, and more. Pat Bruno of the Chicago Sun-Times calls Buona “Chicago’s #1 Italian Beef.

Al’s Beef

169 W. Ontario Street
Chicago, IL 60654

When you want an authentic ltalian beef in the city, look no further than Al’s, invented 70 years ago at the legendary Taylor Street beef stand. Esquire magazine named Al’s beef sandwiches the “best sandwich in America”. That is a tall honor, but one that they take very seriously. Almost as seriously as their beef sandwiches.

Portillo’s Beef SUCKS!!! Remember the old saying “Where’s the Beef” well that’s what you say when you order from any of their locations..

Johnnie’s Beef is a waste of time and SUCKS!! The owner hires illegal Mexicans to prepare the food… So if you want to help support illegal workers and take the chance of getting sick then continue going there.
